STEAM-ENGINE TOYS and MODELS

Our childhood days were filled with Steam-Engine toys and models from the fourties & fifties. The thing we loved the most though, was the railway layout that father built in the spare room. Toy trains in those days were fairly expensive, and each new engine or bridge that we added was the result of Christmas, or having a birthday or saving up our pocket money for many months. Arguably the most famous name in the model steam train world was Hornby, the current catalogue is still going strong... Steam-Engine, toys, models I can well remember the exitement of the visit to the toy shop, the dilemma of what to choose for the money we had and the thrill of seeing the new aquisition finally in place. We would make trees from twigs and cotton wool painted green. Fences and gates carefully glued together from spent matchsticks, cardboard engine sheds and houses, and the farmyard filled with little metal cows and sheep and toy soldiers for the farmhands. I can still remember the sight of that train chuffing under the railway bridge and the smell of the lubricating oil, but best of all was that my dad was there on the floor with us having a great time with us kids.

Kids of today are glued to their computer or games console but when I look back to our childhood, we enjoyed simpler pleasures such as jig-saws, mamods, and all sorts of games that I'm sure given the chance, modern children would still enjoy.Today, there are numerous Model Engineering Clubs that you can join, take the kids you never know, you might just prise them off that computer game and open up a whole new world for them.
