WHERE TO GO ON A STEAM DAY OUT
National Railway Museum, York
The National Railway Museum in York has to be a must see for all Steam enthusiasts. This fascinating museum houses the famous
MALLARD STEAM-ENGINE
It also has
THE FLYING SCOTSMAN
story.Other attractions include a replica of The Rocket, a Chinese Locomotive, the Japanese Shinkansen Bullet Train, Queen Victoria's carriage as well as photographs and various exhibitions throughout the year. Oh, I almost forgot... It's possible to actually go inside the cab of a steam train engine too! Hollycombe Steam Collection
If you are looking for steam powered attractions, then look no further. This is a family attraction that includes a complete Edwardian fairground, three steam railways, and traction engines as well as farm animals, demonstrations and some lovely gardens. Open daily until August 27th and then on Sundays only until October 7th.From Sept 8th until Oct 6th there will be Fairground at night events. Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway
This beautiful steam railway attraction meanders gently along the stunning coastline of South Devon to reach it's destination at Kingswear on the Dart Estuary. Now you can experience the Sea Train Adventure by taking a sea cruise from either Torquay or Brixham along the coast to Dartmouth. Catch the ferry across to Kingswear for your journey steam-engine journey seven miles back along the coast to Paignton, then back on a ferry to your originating port.Railway operates from April until the end of October and is operating it's Christmas "Santa Specials" but check website for exact dates and times. Beamish North of England Open Air Museum
Beamish Open Air Museum is a true step back in time experience.It's a living museum with re-constructed shops, streets and houses. Step back into the past by wandering through the colliery village, coalmine, station and farm. This museum has many days out attractions throughout the year including a Traction Engine rally. Severn Valley Railway
AFTER THE FLOODS .... can you help please?
For years, a band of energetic volunteers have given of their time, energy and money to make the famous Severn Valley Railway one of the best preserved Steam Railways in the country; The recent floods have severely damaged large parts of the line and it will be a hugely expensive task to repair it. True to form, the devoted steam enthusiasts are working hard to get this done but it is an immense undertaking and also needs help from us. If we want to keep lines like this for future generations to be able to share in what we as children were lucky enough to experience first hand,the mighty steam-engine, then we all need to help. Steam Museum Trust
The Steam Museum Trust began life as so many museums do, with an enthusiast who was denied his own steam roller as a boy! Michael List Brain was that boy and in 1991, a trust was formed to promote and encourage the preservation of the steam-engine. They now work in collaboration with Ramsgate Maritime Museum and hold events and open days throughout the year. The collectionof rare and unique steam powered machinery, includes traction engines, steam ships, fairground rides, locomotives, WW2 steam generator and stationary engines.
